On the proliferation of app stores

On the proliferation of app stores, December 22, 2010

A short comment contextualizing the prediction could go right here

Last week Apple announced the January launch of their Mac app store. Everybody and their brother’s slow uncle is opening and app store at this point so we won’t be typically reporting on this kind of thing. But it is timely, in that Google just announced its app store related to Chrome, and as predicted the competition is not taking long to catch up. Here’s a prediction: these app stores are going to get very messy very quickly. We’ve already seen as companies offer the same app for sale in different places and with integration on the sales side at each of, for example, their website for the desktop version and two different products for the iPhone and iPad versions. This sort of thing is going to get much worse before it gets better. With so many companies launching app stores and not figuring out the proper way to tie together cross platform applications in a centralized and consumer friendly way we can expect a few years of app clumsiness before market forces and design sophistication tee up a proper long-terms solution.
